Hi! My name is Katie Benn and I’m a freelance artist living and working in San Francisco, California. I grew up in San Francisco originally, then lived on a boat for many years up north in Sausalito, and then I moved back to the city when I was 19 after a one year stint living in LA.
I have always been a maker of things, someone who spends a lot of time alone writing, drawing and painting. I never in my life thought I would end up doing art full time, but at this point I can’t imagine not doing it. I’ve worked so many different jobs before this- barista, waitress- spent almost 9 years working behind a desk while doing art on the side before I had the confidence to quit and pursue the full time creative life.

私はずっとものづくりをしてきましたが、ひとりで執筆や絵を描いたり絵を描いたりすることに多くの時間を費やしています。フルタイムでアートをすることになるとは思っていませんでしたが、現時点でこれしか考えられません。バリスタやウェイトレスなどこれまで色んな仕事をしてきましたが、仕事を辞めてフルタイムのクリエイティブな生活を送れるようになるまでに9年近くもアートは自分の横にあったんです。

02_What type of artist are you?
あなたはどんなアーティストですか？
A lot of my work is inspired by vintage packaging design and mid century advertisements although the content of my work often explores the human condition and my inner world. I use a lot of different mediums, but lately I’ve been painting mostly with acrylic and interior house paint, as well as drawing digitally in Procreate on my ipad. I love playing with super bright colors and simple shapes to express complex thoughts and ideas.
When I depict people, I like to have their emotions expressed in the gesture of the form, the body language, and let the viewer fill in the details. In this way I think it allows many different kinds of people to find these ideas not only relatable but also as a means of self reflection.
私の作品の多くはビンテージのパッケージデザインや様々なものの色などからインスピレーションを受けて私の内面を表現しています。
私はさまざまなツールを使っているけど、最近は主にアクリルとインテリア用のペンキを使って描いていて、iPad上のProcreateでデジタルに絵を描いてもいます。私は複雑な思考やアイデアを表現するために、鮮やかな色やシンプルなシェイプで遊ぶのが大好きです。
私が人を描写するときには、その人の感情をしぐさやボディランゲージから表現し、見る人にディテールをイメージさせたいと思います。この方法は多くの人がこの関係性を発見できるだけでなく、自分自身に何かを問う意味もあります。

03_Please tell us about where you live. Is there any recommended spot near by?
あなたがどこに住んでいるか教えてくれるかな。オススメのスポットはある？
I live in a tiny studio apartment above a Phở restaurant in a gritty, loud part of San Francisco. As I’m writing this I can hear the bars closing and massive groups of drunk people stumbling for their Uber. There’s faint shouting from down the street where someone has just set off fireworks for no reason other than because it’s Friday and they can. I’m already excited about leaving the house in the morning to get a coffee at either The Richfield, a tiny boxing themed cafe in the Richmond district, or over at Piccino across town by the old shipyards close to my art studio. Honestly, I like to get coffee anywhere where they have oat milk and not too many people.
私はサンフランシスコの少し騒がしい地域にある、フォーのお店の上の小さなステュディオに住んでいます。この記事を書いている間にも、バーが閉まって、大勢の酔っ払い達がUberを待ってたむろしているのが聞こえる。たまに誰か叫んでたりもするかな、金曜だからといって理由もなく花火を打ち上げたりする人がいる通りだからね笑

週末は何してる？
If I’m not working on an urgent project, I like to hide in my apartment, play loud music and experiment with personal art projects. It’s also beginning to be a tradition for me on Saturdays to play music with either my Omichord synthesizer or my Casio SK-1. It’s so goofy, I don’t even know how to read music but I like to make up short songs and it just feels good to make sounds that sound nice. It reminds me of what it felt like to just create with no intention of gaining a final product- playing like when you were a little kid.
I don’t like to go out at night too much on the weekend. Sometimes I feel like an old lady but I like to go out and grab a drink or get dinner with friends during the week when the dive bars are empty and you don’t have to be on a waitlist for a table. That being said, if you invite me to karaoke on the weekend I will not decline the invite. Also, if there’s a good old film playing at The Castro Theater I might go to that. I love old movies so much and The Castro is nearly the only place to go in San Francisco that plays things from the 1920s through the 1980s.
もし急ぎのプロジェクトがなければ、アパートにこもって音楽を大音量でかけて自分の個人的なプロジェクトを進めます。土曜にキーボードやシンセサイザーで遊ぶのも習慣になってきています。ちょっと間が抜けているしどう音楽を演奏するのかも知らないけれど、ちょっとした曲を作るのは楽しいしいい音って単純に気分がいいでしょ。子供の頃みたいに最後にどうなるか考えずにただクリエイトする楽しさを思い出せます。
夜出歩くのはそんなに好きじゃなくて。たまに自分がおばあちゃんになったみたいに感じるけど、バーがすいていて並んだりしなくていい時は外で友達と飲んだり食事したいと思ってる。それからCastro Theaterで古い良い映画をやってたら見に行くかな。古い映画が大好きだし、あそこは20-80年代の映画をやっている唯一の近くの映画館なの。
どうやってキャリアをスタートさせたの？
I never went to school for art. I never went to college. I have just been making things and drawing and painting since I was about 3 or 4 years old. As someone who has dabbled with playing several different instruments, tried playing multiple different sports, art is the one thing in my life that has always brought me comfort, made me feel good and continued to challenge me in ways I find interesting– it’s the one thing that stuck.
The two things that have really gotten me to where I am now is Instagram and the growing community of creative people around me. I’ve received so many opportunities from folks finding my work online and I’ve met so many good friends in the creative community having first met virtually on Instagram. If it weren’t for these friends and learning from these creatives around me I don’t know where I would be.
アートの学校にはいってないし大学も行ってない。3歳か4歳の頃からただ何か作ったり描いたりペイントしたりしている感じ。いくつかの楽器を演奏したり、いくつかのスポーツをしてきた私にとって、アートはいつも癒しをくれて、気分を良くしてくれて、面白いと思った方法で常に挑戦を続けてきたことなの。

AKTRとのコラボはどうだった？
Working with AKTR has been so fun! I’ve been so excited about it! Basketball was the sport I played the longest growing up so it has a special place in my heart. I love AKTR’s aesthetic and friendly energy and I love what you all are doing. The team seems so driven and passionate. You have no idea how much I want to visit, drink some Sporty Coffee and talk art!

次は何が待ってる？なにか大きなニュースはある？
Right now I’m preparing for my third mural. After my first mural experience painting at the Instagram/Facebook office downtown, I’ve been hooked! It’s such a different more physical experience working on art at such a larger scale and I love it. I’m also getting new works together for my third solo exhibition which will be this summer in the capitol of California. I’m excited for some long days in the studio between now and then full of paint, good Spotify playlists and even better coffee. 🙂
今は3度目になる壁画を準備しています。ダウンタウンのInstagram／Facebookオフィスで最初の壁画を描いた後、この世界にはまっちゃったの！こんなに大規模なアートに取り組むのは、今までと全く違うフィジカルな体験で、大好きになったんです！ それから今年の夏にはカリフォルニアの首都で開かれる3回目の個展のために新しい作品を集めているところ。私は今からその時まで長い間、Spotifyのプレイリストを聞いて、コーヒーを飲みながら準備しているアートとスタジオで過ごすのが楽しみよ:)
