ハーイ、サラ！自己紹介おねがい。

Hello! I’m an illustrator living and working in Canada and I specialize in basketball illustration. I grew up on an island in the west coast and later moved to Toronto where I started drawing digitally and supporting myself as a full-time artist.
こんにちは！私はカナダを拠点に活動するイラストレーターで、バスケットボールをモチーフにした作品を作っています。私は西海岸の小さな島で生まれたあと、トロントに引っ越して来てアーティストとしての創作活動を始めました。

2. Where are you live? How is your town?
どこに住んでる？どんな感じのところ？

I live in Dundas West, a small village of fashionable creative types, entrepreneurs and local bar stars in Toronto. It’s a community I grew up admiring when I first moved here and wanted to surround myself with because there’s good people doing great things in wild weather. If you’re visiting Toronto, I would highly recommend visiting 416 Snack Bar, Tokyo Smoke and Imanishi Japanese Kitchen. And of course, The City Pool, for a night on the town.
私が住んでいるのはDundas West（トロントの市街地から車で2−30分）というところで、ファッションとかクリエイティブな人たち、起業家たち、地元のバーが集まる小さいまちです。ここは私が育ったコミュニティがあり、初めて引っ越した時からそこに住む人たちが自然と共に生活するところに感銘を受けて来ました。もしトロントに来る機会があったら、夜はいいバーがたくさん（日本食のいいお店も）あるから行ってみて！

3. How did you start your carrier of your art?
どんな風にしてあなたはアーティストとしてのキャリアをスタートさせたの？

I failed a lot more than I’ve ever succeeded. Art has always been in the background of my failed attempts of landing a long-standing job so I was surprised to find myself working as a full-time artist because it’s something I never took seriously until now. In the past, I’ve worked as barista, trash journalist, PR executive and for a while, I sold plant to millennials. Getting fired from these jobs forced me to take illustration more seriously which is what I do full-time now. It’s been a fun ride.
私は成功したと思う前にたくさん失敗したなと思う。アートをやっていたことはいつも他のフルタイムの仕事をしようとしては長続きしないことの理由になっていて、真剣に向き合ってこなかったアートをフルタイムの仕事にしているということに私は驚いてる。これまでバリスタとかジャーナリストとかPRの仕事とかちょっとずつやって、その失敗からイラストをもっと真剣にやる方向にシフトして今に至るから楽しかったしよかったと思う。

4. Why are you using basketball as a motif of artwork?
なぜバスケットボールをアートワークのモチーフにしているの？

Basketball is a hotbed for culture. Not only did I grow up playing the sport, it represents a larger community that’s deeply connected to sneakers, fashion, hip-hop, and sport. I’m naturally attracted to the movement and self-expression of streetball players; there’s something really freestyle, independent and wild about their self-expression and playing style.
バスケットボールはカルチャーを培うものだから。やってきたスポーツだからってことだけじゃなくて、スニーカーカルチャーとかファッション、ヒップホップなんかとも深くつながっていて大きなコミュニティを作っています。だから私は自然とストリートボールのプレイヤーたちの体の動きとかをスケッチしだしたし、そこにはフリースタイルでプライドがあってワイルドなスタイルがあったから。
